2007 citizenship convention for primary schools

PEACE

Legislative Council Chamber, NSW Parliament House
19 November 2007

"It isn't enough to talk about Peace, one must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it, one must work for it."

Eleanor Roosevelt

The 75 students from the 14 schools that attended this year's Henry Parkes Primary Schools Citizenship Convention at Parliament House on 19 November not only talked about peace, they also demonstrated their belief in a culture of peace through their actions both in their schools, their communities and at the Convention.

They presented their ideas on the theme of 'PEACE' and reported on their activities in their schools and communities aimed at promoting a culture of PEACE.

The school presentations were followed by the participants gathering on the front veranda of the old Rum Hospital to display the PEACE Scrolls they had brought with them to Parliament House (see below). The photograph was then transformed into a PEACE Poster by Graham Spindler and sent to the schools as a memento of their day.

The event ended on a wonderful note with Mr Ben Weiss, community educator and creator of the 'Cooling Conflicts' Project speaking to the participants about his own life experiences and work for Peace and encouraging them in their future work. He left the students with a very powerful message about the importance, when thinking about their future lives and careers, of realising that they could continue their work for Peace as well as the other type of work that they will choose to engage in.
